Stray

I recently got to play the latest indie gem called “Stray” aka the cat game. TL;DR Game is good, buy it, play it, love it A fun little adventure where you get to play as cat and do all the cat things:

  • Knock stuff over and cause chaos? Check
  • Sharpen claws on carpets furniture and door? Check
  • A dedicated button to meow? Check
  • Adorable animations and actions that will make a cat owner go “Yep, that’s exactly what a cat would do”? Check

Gameplay mechanics are relatively simple and the only challenge comes from figuring out various puzzles or outrunning whatever is chasing you. There is a bit of handholding during the platforming segments in a sense that you’re only allowed to follow the button prompts. While this takes a tiny bit of freedom away, it also removes the potential for platforming-related slip-ups that could end in a disaster. The game recommends you play with a gamepad and with exception of a few segments where I struggled with camera controls slightly, overall it feels solid enough. Now some might argue that the price is too much for a linear singleplayer experience with only potential for replayability being completionist runs in case you missed anything during your first playthrough. I spent 9 hours on my fiest playthrough and only got 11 out of 24 achievments so I know I will be spending a little more time hunting down them easter eggs and side quests. For me it’s money well spent - you can often end up spending more than that for a far worse experience (like going to cinema to watch a really bad movie).
